چکیده

Replacing portions of fallow between sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] harvest and wheat (Triticum aestivum) planting with cover crops provides opportunity to increase productivity profitability in dryland winter wheat–sorghum–fallow (WSF) cropping systems. The objective this study was identify potential spring replacement management optimize resource use efficiency a WSF system. conducted 2013–2018 at Garden City, KS. Three crop rotation phases (WSF, SFW, FWS) were the main plot, sub plot. Cover treatments further split into hayed left standing groups estimate forage potential. Results showed precipitation utilization storage (PUtSE) increased by 146% for grain crop, 50% hayed, 38% compared fallow. Available soil water (ASWPww) not different Spring triticale [×Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus (Secale × Triticum)] had up 182% more accumulation over other 108% yield advantage crops. Our findings replacement, forage-hayed, have greater PUtSE than which may economic returns if subsequent yields are reduced. moderate similar ASWPww fallow, standing, or would be best choice production goal is maximize yields.

Cover crops support ecological intensification of arable cropping systems

A major challenge for agriculture is to enhance productivity with minimum impact on the environment. Several studies indicate that cover crops could replace anthropogenic inputs and enhance crop productivity. However, so far, it is unclear if cover crop effects vary between different cropping systems, and direct comparisons among major arable production systems are rare. Here we compared the sh...

Interactions among leguminous trees, crops and weeds in a no-till alley cropping system

Trees improve the soil quality and their rapid growth in the tropics make agroforestry systems potentially effective for establishing low-input agricultural systems in this region. This study assessed the effects of the biophysical interactions among leguminous trees, weeds, cotton and maize in an alley cropping system. The experiment comprised six treatments: Clitoria + Gliricidia; Acacia ...

Elevated naturally occurring arsenic in a semiarid oxidizing system, Southern High Plains aquifer, Texas, USA

High groundwater As concentrations in oxidizing systems are generally associated with As adsorption onto hydrous metal (Al, Fe or Mn) oxides and mobilization with increased pH. The objective of this study was to evaluate the distribution, sources and mobilization mechanisms of As in the Southern High Plains (SHP) aquifer, Texas, relative to those in other semiarid, oxidizing systems. Elevated g...
